How Do I Know if Assisted Living is Right for My Loved One?

At Braemar Living we get this question all the time.  We break down all the benefits of assisted living versus home care.

Finding the right care for an aging loved one can be one of the most difficult times for families. When prospective residents come for their first tour of our community we hear the same outdated misconceptions each time. Things like – “I won’t be able to drive any more”, “it’s too expensive”, or “everyone only eats pudding here”. We’re happy to say those ideas are wrong on all accounts.

But what is assisted living offering you?

Independence

Assisted living is NOT nursing care. Our residents live independently in suites with a bedroom, private living space, bathroom, and kitchenette. We emphasize choice and autonomy without the complications of maintaining a home.

We offer laundry services, dining services, and daily activities. No more stress about trips to the grocery store, basement laundry, calls to plumbers, or mowing the lawn.  Many Braemar residents have a coffeemaker in their living area, a microwave and a fridge. Have coffee in your room but then join a stress-free dinner hour prepared by our chefs, with no cleanup.

Socialization

Studies have shown that community engagement and living promotes well-being in adults of all ages. Social isolation can increase the risk of cognitive and mental decline. With daily excursions and a full recreation calendar, residents can choose how active they want to be. We eliminate the driving and planning overwhelm by doing it for you.  We even have a limited number of dual suites with two bedrooms. Perhaps moving in with your sister or neighbor sounds better. We can make that happen here.

Cost Effective

One of the biggest fears that we hear is: ”Assisted living is too expensive”. “You cannot afford it, and it will drain your finances”. In fact, assisted living can often be more COST EFFECTIVE than staying at home with daily aide visits.  This seems counterintuitive when someone is no longer paying a mortgage, but the costs of running a home add up quickly. Consider the costs for insurance, general maintenance, groceries, property taxes, and housekeeping services. Then add in the cost of daily home health care if necessary. These stressors and costs quickly start mounting.  The cost of maintaining a home can quickly exceed $5K per month in the New York City area and then you add the cost of home health care. Once you tally the numbers it’s clear that a mortgage-free home isn’t “free.”

 Health, Wellness, and Nutrition

At Braemar Living all your meals are overseen by a Registered Dietician to ensure that they are nutritious, balanced, and delicious. We cater to special diets, so each resident can feel at home. No more TV-dinners, cans of soup, or wasted food. Residents eat communally in our beautiful dining room, eliminating an evening alone.

We have daily, proactive monitoring of physical and mental health and provide immediate access to doctors, nurses, and healthcare. Our team is there when you can’t be to ensure your loved one is attended to.

 The Braemar Difference

Braemar Living is family owned and operated. Unlike our competitors, we aren’t a faceless national corporation. Each location has a dedicated team that has been with us for years. We treat every resident as if they are our own parent or grandparent. When you come to Braemar Living everyone is family.
